VENICE (CBSLA.com) — Crews Wednesday worked to repair an 8-inch water main break in Venice.

The underground pipe burst around 3:45 a.m. in the 700 block of East California Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Upon their arrival, crews found nearly a foot of water flooding the neighborhood.

The rupture subsequently caused a sinkhole to erupt in the area.

Crews have shut off water within the neighborhood.

More than 70 customers have been affected.

CBS2’s Mark Dunn reported the pipe was installed in 1913.

Water restoration was expected by noon.
